Motherhood Series: My Journey from Pregnancy to Labor

Hey Queens!

Welcome to the start of my Motherhood series, where I’ll be sharing the lessons, challenges, and joys I’ve encountered along the way. As a new mom, I know firsthand how overwhelming and beautiful the journey to motherhood can be. Today, I want to take you through my pregnancy journey, which was relatively easy but came with a unique set of challenges most notably, gestational diabetes.

My Pregnancy Journey

From the beginning, my pregnancy felt like a breeze, but around the 20-week mark, I received a diagnosis that threw me for a loop: gestational diabetes. This wasn’t caused by weight gain, as many people assume. Instead, it was due to the placenta’s inability to process digestion correctly, which can significantly impact the baby’s weight. My case was severe, which led doctors to express concern about the potential for obesity in the baby. The solution? They wanted to induce labor early.

I was placed on a pill and, eventually, insulin, which isn’t always the standard treatment. But given the severity of my situation, it was necessary. Along with medication, I was given a strict diet, cutting out rice, carbs, and pasta. I also had to commit to walking for 15-20 minutes after each meal and drinking more water. It was a big adjustment, but I was determined to keep my baby healthy.

Preparing for Birth

As the weeks passed, my doctors were preparing me for labor, and I got what I like to call my “cheat sheet” for inducing labor naturally. This included more intimacy with my partner and eating dates yes, dates! To my surprise, these methods worked wonders. I went from being 0 cm dilated to 4 cm in just two hours.

The C-section Debate

One aspect of my journey that I found both eye-opening and frustrating was the push for a C-section. While I understand the necessity in some cases, I couldn’t help but feel like the doctors were prioritizing the cost factor over my personal experience and health. It’s well-known that C-sections are more expensive than natural births, and I felt that this was a major reason for the push, despite my own preferences.

This brings me to the stigma surrounding C-sections. Society tends to act as though mothers who give birth via C-section haven’t really given birth, which is not only wrong but deeply problematic. A mother’s birth journey, regardless of how it happens, is valid and should be celebrated. Whether it’s natural, induced, or through a C-section, every mother endures immense physical and emotional effort to bring life into the world.

More to Come
